READER'S TIP: The
Lowdown on the Fenimore fire
This fire happened at the "Bodega" at 65a Fenimore Street, run by a
Jamaican guy named "Boo". The fire started after he closed. This place
is a very crowded little store with very little business, so it is
possible it was spontaneous combustion. The proprietor is usually
sitting out on the sidewalk all day bbqing (not at all related to his
business or store). People thought the BBQ started the fire, but it
was probably something in the store. The tenants in the apartments
above were evacuated for about an hour. The next day Boo was sitting
in a lawn chair barbquing as usual in front of his blackened store
with no power.

The

Peanuts, Copies
of 1950 Game Program, Knishes and more at K-dog!
If you
were walking down Lincoln Road on May 20th, 1950 you would
almost certainly have heard the sound of Red Barber calling the
Dodgers game coming out of open windows up and down the street.
The Pittsburgh Pirates were just a long line drive away at Ebbets Field
playing the beloved Dodgers on a great day for baseball. No one
could have imagined that before the decade was out the Dodgers
would be gone and Ebbets Field, a gem of an old-school ballpark,
would sit abandoned awaiting its eventual destruction.
Relive the experience of the glory days of Brooklyn Dodgers
baseball at K-dog Sunday 10/8 at 4:30 (now that the Mets have
taken care of business by sweeping the "Dodgers", what
else do you have to do?). You'll hear the full radio broadcast
of the game, and can nosh on authentic Ebbets-era treats! K-dog
is on Lincoln Road between Flatbush Avenue and Ocean Avenue. |

"World
Can't Wait" - NYC Thursday, 10/05
"Endless Wars. Lies. Torture. Katrina. Bring this to
a halt! It’s simple, failure to act to stop all the
horrors Bush is bringing to the world is complicity.
October 5, 2006 is a day of mass resistance to drive out
the Bush regime. We have 48 hours to make bold moves in
bringing these crimes to a halt.
World
Can’t Wait—Drive Out the Bush Regime has one
simple goal: to create a political situation where the
Bush administration's program is repudiated, where Bush
himself is driven from office, and where the whole
direction he has been taking U.S. society is reversed.
This is not rhetoric or hype. It’s a plan. I urge you to
be on a mission with it." From the World Can't Wait

THE LOEW'S KINGS - BACK FROM THE GRAVE?
A Major
Step Forward for the
Loew's Kings Theater
Marty
Markowitz and the EDC have officially begun the process
of courting developers and investors for a full-scale
renovation of the beloved Loew's Kings theater on
Flatbush Avenue.
Read the full EDC press release.
“Our goal is to receive responses that are
forward-thinking, but with a genuine reverence
for the theater’s glorious past."
EDC Interim President Joshua J. Sirefman
“The return of the Kings will confirm Brooklyn’s status as
the creative capital of New York City, and when
this people’s palace is back in the heart of the
borough in all its former splendor, it will be a
great day for both Brooklynites who have walked
her aisles and those who have yet to discover
her majesty.”

Assemblyman James
Brennan Funds Restoration of Nethermead Paths
|
|
 |
On a visit to Prospect Park today,
New York State Assemblyman
James F. Brennan (44th
Assembly District) announced the allocation of $100,000
in new funding for the reconstruction of Prospect Park’s
Nethermead Paths. This follows $180,000 in funding Brennan had
already obtained for the Park to initiate the first phase of the
Nethermead Paths reconstruction project. As part of his visit to
the Park, Brennan was joined by Prospect Park Alliance President
Tupper Thomas for a walk along the historic path system in the
Nethermead, which is the Greensward heart of the 585-acre Park.
"I am pleased to continue my support of the work of the Prospect
Park Alliance to improve opportunities for the public to enjoy
our wonderful Park," said Jim Brennan. "I know that restorations
of the Nethermead Paths will bring pleasure to many people for
years to come".
"The lovely meadow of the Nethermead is really the heart of
Prospect Park," said Tupper Thomas. "Parents taking their
children to have a picnic, people walking their dogs, and
couples strolling over to the Audubon Center at our beautiful
Boathouse, they all use the Nethermead paths. So it’s truly
wonderful that Assemblyman Brennan has so generously funded the
restoration of this important path system at the heart of the
Park."

Loew's Kings Update
Good news
from "Mr. Loew's King" Bruce Friedman
Planet PLG Prediction: When the glorious, yet
abandoned, Loew's Kings finally is restored, there will
be a plaque on the wall of the lobby thanking Bruce
Friedman for his tireless efforts to bring this gem of a
movie palace/theater back to life. He's been at it for
two decades and has some promising news to report:
At this point, we are definitely moving forward:
#1-The NYC Economic Development Corporation will issue
their Request For _Expression of Interest, a precursor
to an RFP
(Request for Proposal) toward the end of September.
#2-In the meantime, I am working with Marty Markowitz's
office in adding to the mailing list of potential
developers, theater operators, entertainment packagers
etc. And preparing a video showcase that will soon
appear on his web site.
#3-I have been working to Save The Kings since 1987 and
believe that this effort brings us closer to being
successful than ever before.
Hopefully the theater project could be coupled with the
adjacent parking lot for further development.

BUILD
IT AND THEY WILL COME:
The Brooklyn Dodger's and West Indian Culture Museums
 |
We recently received the following email
from Adrian Lesher, a loyal visitor and frequent contributor to the
Planet:
"Since I've moved here,
I've toyed with a couple of ideas for making the area a better
place. Mind you, I've never DONE anything about these ideas, but
I'm curious as to what you think of them."
"The first is that I think that the old bread factory and
adjacent building (the complex one that now houses Phat Albert,
the car wash, and the milk store and the beverage distributor)
should be acquired so that it can be turned into a museum
space."
"Once renovated (with a working clock
tower and fully restored exterior), these buildings would make
an excellent space for (1) a museum devoted to the Brooklyn
Dodgers (there may be some licensing problems with the LA
Dodgers) or Jackie Robinson, and (2)a museum connected with
Caribbean culture, perhaps one showcasing Labor Day parade
costumes, instruments, etc." |
With all respect to Phat Albert (and we
do appreciate the owner cleaning things up at his store) we think this
is an outstanding idea. The building was once the old Bond Bread Bakery;
Brooklyn Dodger fans fondly recall the smell of freshly baked bread and
the sight of the imposing building as the first thing they experienced
coming out of the IRT station; it meant you were almost there. Ebbetts
Field, after all, was just down Empire Boulevard where Ebbetts Houses
now stand. What a perfect place to bring those years, and that unique
Brooklyn experience, back to life!
Having a West Indian museum in the same building where the cultures,
history, visual arts, music and politics of the islands can be explored
would be equally amazing. The West Indian museum could also focus on the
West Indian community in New York and present colorful displays on the
West Indian Day Parade throughout the years with videos, music and
costumes. It would become a focal point at the end of the parade which,
after all, ends up in PLG every year.
What a great way this would be to boost our neighborhood's economy which
suffers from massive unemployment particularly among African- and
Caribbean-American men - without resorting to crass overdevelopment or
commercialism. The museum would provide jobs, a focal point for West
Indian pride and PLG's first big-time cultural institution just as
Brooklyn is becoming a tourist destination in its own right.
Just imagine the school field trips
these places would draw; not to mention people flocking to West Indian
events and concerts. Baseball fans and Dodger fans from across the
country would just have to take the trip to the new shrine to the
Brooklyn Dodgers when in New York. Tourists at the Botanic Garden
(technically in Crown Heights) would be drawn across the street to see
PLG's new attractions. Those double-decker tour busses that currently
come down Washington Avenue, turning north when they reach our
neighborhood, would now have a reason to stop and those dollars could
help our businesses thrive.
Some ideas for the Dodger's Museum:
| - |
Use your museum
ticket for 10% off at participating PLG restaurants and stores |
| - |
The Brooklyn
Cyclones could have a ticket booth in the museum with a shuttle
bus to Coney Island on game days |
| - |
The museum could
could focus on the importance of the Brooklyn Dodgers to the
various immigrant communities in Brooklyn and how it briefly
brought those different planets closer to each other |
| - |
The inspiring story
of Jackie Robinson would obviously be a huge part of the museum
with a multimedia exhibit of voices and images from the time
including all of the racist abuse he had to endure. The restored
watchtower could display the same circular blue and white "42"
symbol (his jersey number) now retired in all MLB ballparks |
| - |
A section of the
building could recreate the grandstands at Ebbetts field, and
through sets, audio effects and video projection, make you feel
like you are there |
What do you think?

MEETING REPORT
 |
The PLUS Board Meeting:
PLUS invited the Planet along
to their board meeting at Ali's Roti Shop. The meeting was a sort of
try-out of a concept PLUS has been working on for sometime: The PLG
Dinner Club. The idea is to select a PLG restaurant and invite PLGers to
come for a specially prepared meal. The dinners will give PLGers a
chance to get to know their neighbors and some of the great local
establishments in the neighborhood. The evening was a success and PLUS
plans to schedule a repeat dinner at Ali's soon for the community at
large. This will be followed by dinners at other PLG restaurants (The
Meytex Lounge, which serves food from Ghana, might be next - a chance to
see and taste what lies behind the famous tinted glass! ) |
|
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: |
 |
Ali's Roti Shop (site of the meeting) is phenomenal
After five years of living in
PLG I finally made it to Ali's - I was very impressed. I expected the
Rotis to be good (and they are excellent) but I had no idea that they
had so many other delicious treats. The Barbeque chicken, 5-star
chicken, doubles, lentils, amazing vegetable dishes (whose names I can't
remember...), tamarind balls (yahoo!) were all delicious. We will
definitely be back - and if you haven't tried it yet, we suggest
you give it a try! |
 |
PLUS lands another $25K for Storefront Improvement Program
PLUS has obtained an additional
$25K from the NYC Department of Small Business Services to fund
its
storefront improvement program bringing the total amount of funds
allotted to the program to $50K. Businesses that are participating so
far include: The Maple Street School, K-Dog, The 51 Lincoln Road Mexican
Place That Does Not Yet Have a Name, Businesses that are applying or
have expressed interest include: The bodega at the corner of Lincoln and
Ocean and The Meytex Lounge. |

PLUS and
PLGArts are Preparing for ArtMart 11225
Mark and Lee (and maybe others)
spent a lot of time marketing the ArtMart 11225 to cool artists at the
recent Atlantic Antic and have been working with Debbie Hamilton and
others at PLGArts on organizing everything. The street will not be shut
down - artists will set-up on the sidewalks. There will be some
marketing of businesses along Flatbush at the event and people will be
handing out flyers at subways stops and in the park. We are very
excited that this is happening and hopeful that it will convince our
local Community Board that the neighborhood wants and can handle regular
market on this stretch of Lincoln. Volunteers and artists are definitely
needed - contact Mark Dicus
or PLGArts. |

Do You Miss the Fun of the CD11 Congressional Race?
Get behind the scenes with Azi Paybarah and John Koblin
"David Yassky had been yawning for four hours. It was 8 p.m.
on the Saturday before the election and he'd been campaigning since 9
a.m. It was pitch dark outside, and he turned his soccer-dad blue Mazda
minivan to the corner of Albany and Lincoln in Crown Heights."
"Dozens of black teenagers and twentysomethings were dancing to loud
reggaeton and enjoying the late hours of a block party. It may not have
been an ideal setting for the super-white, Oxford-shirt and
rimless-Prada-wearing Mr. Yassky to search for votes."
"But Mr. Yassky plunged ahead, weaving his way past the revelers. He
reached the D.J. booth and grabbed the microphone to introduce himself.
What he heard back were jeers and hisses."

READER'S TIP: "Red Carpet" is a Restaurant
The 2nd Coming of a PLG greasy spoon
A kind reader tell us that Red Carpet is a (of course) a restaurant
and it's not exactly new: "It first opened
up a while ago (early spring I think, although I can't remember for
sure). They were only open for a month or two before they shut down. The
owners were nice, but didn't seem very motivated, and their hours were
pretty irregular. Not sure if the place is now under new management, but
the menu seems pretty similar. Basic diner type breakfast and lunch
food... eggs, pancakes, soup, salad, burgers, grilled cheese, fish &
chips. I haven't eaten there yet since they re-opened, so I can't
comment on the quality. Hopefully they'll do better this time around!" |

71st Precinct Community Council General Meeting
When: Thursday, September
21st from 7:30pm - 9:30pm
Where: I.S. 61, 400 Empire Blvd (corner of New York Ave)
The Community Council gives mere civilians a chance to listen to and ask
questions of the top cop at the 71st, the affable Inspector Frank Vega,
and hear him report on what is going on in the precinct.
We strongly recommend you attend. Air complaints directly to the top
leadership about lack of police response to any issues you have, hear
what other residents have on their minds, meet and forge relationships
with community leaders from Crown Heights and let the 71st know that PLG
exists and cares.

My wife calls Italy 2-3 times a day... I just downloaded Skype and bought a

phones in Italy (cell phones cost more) and the sound quality is excellent. If
your peeps abroad are a little geeky it's even better; calls to other people who
also have Skype are free. Calls to regular phones anywhere in the US are free

Take a Tour of Nostrand Avenue with PLGer Adrian Lesher
We put together this slideshow from photos
Adrian sent of some of his hang-outs on Nostrand Avenue. Music by Gnarls
Barkley.
Notes from the tour
It was kind of rainy and some of the stores were closed because it is Sunday, so
the photos could be a little more vibrant.
Allan's Bakery
Very popular West Indian bakery. Name-checked in Glenville Lovell's Caribbean
Brooklyn detective fiction. East side of the street between Maple
Disc Mart
This interesting little store has drums, CDs, books and other items primarily
pertaining to Yoruban religious practices (and related ones such as Santeria,
Voudou, etc.). I've also found some hard to find African fiction (once I found
the equivalent of Hardy Boys books, written by Nigerian author Cyprian Ekwensi).
Maximillian Bell's bar
The images show caricatures of customers, a painting of Maximillian Bell himself
the way he looked back when the place was new, other photos and knick-knacks.
The jukebox has old reggae, soca, jazz, r&b and even stuff like Ace Cannon.
Juices Enterprises
This little factory makes tasty Caribbean drinks and sells them to places like
Golden Crust. One I like has beets and sweetened milk. Many of the drinks, like
"Front End Lifter" are alleged to have Viagra-like properties. Located between
Midwood and Rutland, west side. and Midwood.
Culpepper's
Southwest side of Nostrand and Lincoln road. Well-reviewed Bajan food.
Nostrand Lefferts Houseware & Hardware
Very helpful hardware store, on the northeast corner of Nostrand and Lefferts.
Locksmith service. A bit pricey, though.
Lenny's Pizza
Not great, but ok pizza and ice cream. On the west side of Nostrand between
Sterling Street and Lefferts.

New:
Bob Marley Boulevard Unveiling Slideshow
Despite Councilman Barron's
vow, the Boulevard is still only 8 blocks long
On a very hot July 1st,
2006 the city of New York renamed an 8-block section of Church Avenue (way out
in eastern Brooklyn) "Bob Marley Boulevard". In his speech, City Councilman
Charles Barron (the main figure behind the renaming -- standing to the left of
Rohan Marley in the picture below) said he would never give up the fight to
spread the Marley name to all of Church Avenue -- 8 blocks, he said, was not an
adequate tribute to the greatness of Bob Marley. We totally agree but have had
trouble getting a return call from Councilman Barron's office on our offer to
help. In the hopes of sparking renewed interest, we present the
Bob Marley Unveiling slideshow (Windows Media Player required - music by
Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley).
NOTE: For a raucous drinking game take a shot of your favorite spirit for
every Brooklyn politician you can name -- two shots for every candidate for a
judgeship.

Caribbean American Weekly
Endorses Chris Owens
We reproduce a reproduction of the endorsement below (CAW
is not online)
"We heartily endorse the candidacy of Chris Owens. He is 'a breath of fresh air'
in the toxic atmosphere of Brooklyn machine politics. He offers a clear
alternative to the Carl Andrews school of patronage, to the David Yassky school
of political opportunism, and to the Yvette Clarke school of capitulation to
powerful real estate developers." In summation, they say, "Chris Owens is head
and shoulders above the rest of the congressional field. He best exemplifies the
Shirley Chisholm paradigm of clean, independent and progressive politics. We
reiterate our mantra for this campaign 'Owens in 2006. Unbought and Unbossed.'"

CD11 Forum in Park Slope
Meet and listen to all 4
candidates for congress
If you dig politics and
you haven't gone to one of these forums we suggest you get your
butt in gear. This one, on Wednesday, September 6 — just six
days before the primary — is sure to be heated. With the recent
flurry of endorsements and controversies the candidates will
sure have plenty to talk about (who knows, they might even touch
on a few issues). The fun starts at 7pm (Brooklyn time) at
Congregation Beth Elohim on 8th Avenue and Garfield Place in
Park Slope. |

Marcia Lloyd at
K-Dog: Portraits: Italy/ New York
Marcia Lloyd, a long-time resident of PLG (rivaling even Bob
Marvin), will be having an exhibition of her photography at
K-Dog and Dunebuggy on Lincoln Road between Flatbush and Ocean.
The official opening will be on Sunday, September 10, from
5-6:30 p.m. The exhibition, entitled "Portraits: Italy/ New
York", will contain 16 of Lloyd's photographs. The photographs
reflect her fascination with the difference in the faces of
people in Italy and in New York, particularly those of older
people, and the reflection of the differences in attitudes
toward aging in both places.

Race for Congress Gets Kinda Weird
Songs, slights and a Murtha of a
Town Hall
Suddenly, it seems, the war has
replaced Atlantic Yards, Yasskygate and affordable housing as the big
issue of the day. Chris Owens just released
a song for peace. Yvette Clarke, fresh off what The
Daily Gotham is calling "Diplomagate",
scheduled an anti-war
Town Hall Meeting in Park Slope last night (Major Owens'
district, not hers) and she brought in a ringer: Conservative Democratic
Congressman, and recent high profile anti-war convert, John Murtha, who
earlier in the day had endorsed Clarke's run.
Read The Daily Gotham's summary of the evening (warning
-- more than slightly partisan). |

BP's Crew Cleans Lincoln
Road Development Site
After years of neglect
the graffiti comes off
If you are a frequent
visitor to the Planet you know that we often kvetch about absentee landlords who
allow their PLG properties to become festering eyesores. The massive development
site at 28-40 Lincoln Road was, until now, a prime example. We contacted Mark
Dicus of PLUS back in June about this property and he suggested speaking to the
owner about Marty Markowitz's graffiti removal program (which is free for
property owners). Mark gave him a call, and the owner agreed to fill out the
form we faxed to him. Friday night around midnight, according to PLGer Tom
Gordon, "a
full crew was at the station scrubbing the entire interior and the area
outside". We think this is a nice improvement over the urban-blight look and
hope it is only the beginning of reclaiming this property from abandonment. We
will be following-up (read pestering) the owner about his future plans
soon.

99 Ocean To Join Graffiti
Removal and Storefront Improvement
A long campaign by Mark
Dicus of PLUS pays off
PLUS has been talking with Jose, the
owner of the bodega on Lincoln Road and Ocean, and the management company that
operates 99 Ocean Avenue (the big brick/mustard job shown below) about the BP's
graffiti removal service and
PLUS' storefront improvement program for quite some time. Jose liked the
idea and the management company finally agreed last week to participate. While
it will take some time, the bodega on Lincoln will eventually be cleaned of
graffiti and will sport a brand new awning (provided no one backs out). If you
live in the building, you might take the time to thank the owners for helping
make improvements to PLG.
